GIGS 2008

BRAINLOVE XMAS PARTY, THE GEORGE TAVERN, LONDON - w/SMOKE FAIRIES, RATFACE, and NAPOLEON IIIRD - 19/12/08

Last gig of 2008. A quiet year, all told. Lots got done behind the scenes but I didn't play out as much. Hopefully that'll change next year. Anyway this was a nice end to the year. Playing for all the Brainlove gang and a few bemused punters.

Setlist:

MUSIC IS MY BOYFRIEND, THE GOOD SHIP, KILBURN, LONDON - w/CHARLIE XCX, METRO BOULOT DISCO and SAD SHIELDS - 28/11/08

Good gig. Unusually professional sound guy. Lots of people. I enjoyed it. I might stop writing these little synopses for every gig, I'm running out of things to say. For example the previous entry commenting on the wallpaper? What the hell was that about? No one cares what the wallpaper was like.

Setlist:

SWN FESTIVAL, THE GATE ARTS CENTRE, CARDIFF - w/STEPHEN FRETWELL, MARTIN CARR, ROD THOMAS, MR HUW, JOHN MOUSE - 14/11/08

Nice venue. Good gig with an attentive crowd. bit of trouble with sound on the first song. the wallpaper looked like a dole flat. Joined by some of the volunteers for two songs.

Setlist:

WOOLFIRE FESTIVAL, WOODMANCOTT - w/NAPOLEON IIIRD, CATS IN PARIS, CAPITOL K, KEYBOARD CHOIR, APPLICANTS, MODERNAIRE, THE MOULETTES and others... - 29/08/08

First 'real' festival appearance for me (not counting playing indietracks with silence at sea). Cool little place in the middle of the new forest. Bedecked with inflatable stars and in good company amidst some other weird and wonderful bands. Lots of dancing, which I approve of.

Setlist:

ANTI-FOLK WALES ALL-DAYER - CLWB Y BONT, PONTYPRIDD - w/MR DUKE, LOU CELLO, HUW M, & 'VIC' - 24/08/08

Another quiet clwb y bont gig. Same bill would've probably had twice as many people in cardiff. Shame really because all the acts were great.

Setlist:

MISH MASH - TEN FEET TALL, CARDIFF - w/KITES, THE ASH AND THE OAK, and FEBRIA - 21/08/08

Minor disaster with sound guy utterly failing to turn up. Cardiff hero The Ed stepped in to the rescue (wrecking a date in the process) for which he deserves unending kudos. The whole thing ran about two hours late as a consequence. First gig using the monome 40h.

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE FESTIVAL OXFORD - JERICHO TAVERN - w/KEYBOARD CHOIR, THE RETRO SPANKEES, MEWGATZ, PSEUDO NIPPON, TEAM BRICK, RATFACE, and DEAD SINGER - 09/08/08

Catastrophe riddled day as no fewer than three bands canceled due to illness, family problems, and splitting up, plus one simply didn't turn up. Nonetheless the old wartime spirit kicked in and fun was had. I was particularly waffly onstage.

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE FESTIVAL LEEDS - BRUDENELL SOCIAL CLUB, LEEDS - w/THE RESEARCH, BEARSUIT, NAPOLEON IIIRD, CATS IN PARIS, APPLICANTS, CAPITOL K, KEYBOARD CHOIR, JAM ON BREAD, THE RETRO SPANKEES & more... - 02/08/08

Liked this venue. Oddly underattended. Incident with sound guy thinking I'd finished after four songs - apparently because I waved...

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE VS. OIB RECORDS ALLDAYER - WESTHILL HALL, BRIGHTON - w/BEARSUIT, FRIENDS OF THE BRIDE, THE BOBBY MCGEES, APPLICANTS, POWER UP!, KEYBOARD CHOIR, PSEUDO NIPPON, POPE JOAN, LONELY GHOSTS and others - 06/07/2008

Nice return to Westhill Hall for the Brainlove gang. Personnel issues meant fideL playing solo for the applicants set. Power Up! were great as ever. Bearsuit were good fun. Thumbs up.

Setlist:

'TWO THOUSAND AND ACE' LAUNCH PARTY - AMERSHAM ARMS, NEW CROSS, LONDON - w/CAPITOL K, MODERNAIRE, ACE BUSHY STRIPTEASE, THE RETRO SPANKEES, APPLICANTS, DEAD SINGER, & ALCXXK - 29/06/08

Brainlove Records compilation launch party. This was a 'rarities' set so I got to play lots of curios that I don't normally get to do.

Setlist:

ZONINO 3.5 - BRIXTON WINDMILL, LONOND - w/HORSEBOX, 4 OR 5 MAGICIANS, TESSELATORS and others... - 28/06/08

Web legend bamos invited me down for the three and a halfth Zonino. Late afternoon post-barbecue set helped me reconnect with my 'people'.

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE CLUB - THE GEORGE TAVERN, LONDON - W/JAM ON BREAD & ALCXXK - 27/06/08

First night of a three night 'residency' in London (2nd if you count a gig with silence at sea the night before). Nice long loud set to an enthusiastic crowd.

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE VS AKOUSTIK ANARKHY JOINT FESTIVAL - THE RAMPANT LION, MANCHESTER - w/CATS IN PARIS, CAPITOL K, NAPOLEON IIIRD, JAM ON BREAD, THE EMPTY SET, ISLANDS LOST AT SEA and others... - 15/06/08

Good set to enthusiastic crowd. Some laptop trouble. Apparently I need some kind of anti-vibration foam. Hmmm.... First gig using the Kaossilator.

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE ALL-DAYER 2 - THE WINDMILL, BRIXTON - w/NAPOLEON IIIRD, GAY AGAINST YOU, TEAM BRICK, APPLICANTS, CATS IN PARIS & others - 24/05/08

Great gig this. Typical Brainlove party. I played acoustic with the volunteers like the last few times and despite being worried people would miss the computer it went down well.

Setlist:

ANTI-FOLK WALES - CLWB Y BONT, PONTYPRIDD - w/SILENCE AT SEA - 21/05/08

Another acoustic Volunteers set. I also played bass in Silence at Sea at this gig.

Setlist:

MELTDOWN - MILGI'S YURT, CARDIFF - w/RUBY SAMBA TRIO, TOP SHELF JAZZ & HALCYON DAVE - 11/05/08

Acoustic set with Volunteers Roberts & Janes. First time I've played in a Yurt, unsurprisingly.

Setlist:

FREAKSHOW - DEMPSEYS, CARDIFF - w/JOY OF SEX & DOUG GOBEY - 07/04/08

My third Freakshow appearance. This time I wasn't doing the usual PWL songs but an improv using a monome device and various other things. There was no setlist as such but my set included bits of the following songs: 'George, Albert & James', 'Better Than Television' (by Silence at Sea), Tree of Knowledge, Repetition 2 and various other ad libbed nameless things.

THIS IS FAKE D.I.Y. PRESENTS... - THE FLY, LONDON - w/THE RESEARCH & WE ARE THE PHYSICS - 02/04/08

Enjoyed this one despite being ill. Fun set to a watchful crowd. Got onstage big-ups from both other bands and generally had a splendid time.

Setlist:

HUW STEPHENS PRESENTS... - ICA, LONDON - w/MR HUW, GENOD DROOG, RADIO LUXEMBOURG & MC MABON - 29/02/08

Great gig this. Really good celebratory atmosphere from the london welsh ex-pats. Also there were a group of special needs children dancing down the front having a great time. A first I can say but a really good idea to take them along to something like this.

Setlist:

KRUGER PRESENTS 'ONE MAN BAND MONTH' - BUFFALO BAR, CARDIFF - w/DENNIS HOPPER CHOPPERS & SAMBA LUCAS - 19/02/08

Small but attentive crowd. It was fucking cold that night so I don't blame people for not coming out. DHC looked a bit like some kind of david lynch psycho figure thrashing out and banging drums in the light of his single red bulb. Fun.

Setlist:

LAST.FM PRESENTS... - OLD BLUE LAST, SHOREDITCH, LONDON - w/GAY AGAINST YOU & LOOK LOOK (DANCING BOYS) - 09/02/08

Nice packed pub and good noisy sound. This whole gig was filmed and the footage should be up on last.fm at some point. I'll put a link here if I remember.

Setlist:

MIWSIG PRESENTS... - LITTLE O'NEIL'S, CARDIFF - w/THE BOBBY MCGEES & LUCKY DELUCCI - 19/01/08

First gig of the year supporting the excellent Bobby McGees. O'Neils was full to bursting which is a shame because that means no one can see. Did some new stuff and felt nice and loud.

Setlist:

INTERSTELLAR DISCO JAMMMMM - NORKS TITTY BAR, THE MOON - w/DAVID BOWIE, HOWIE B & THE FREDDY MERCURY FROG CHORUS - 00/00/08

Last minute stand-in for The Prodigy who were too ill to sing. Usual sort of Norks experience. Air conditioning was on straight in my face so it was really fucking cold.

Setlist:
