GIGS 2006

DEATH TO THE DJ - SOUNDHOUSE, BOLTON - w/DUFFLE, THE DRAINPIPES, ARC GENERATOR, & THE CHILDREN - 15/12/06

Last gig of the year and it was really good fun. First time at the soundhouse and it was a nice big crowd. Felt like i was really playing songs people wanted to hear when I introduced the 'hits' i got some cheers and some dancing. Drew blood during my last guitar solo of the year when I decided to just punch my guitar rather than play it. Fun.

Setlist:

MY MUM'S SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY - CRICKET CLUB, LITTLE LEVER -w/DRFITWOOD - 01/12/06

More nerve wracking by far than playing on Xfm was playing a solo acoustic set to a silent room full of old family friends. Was nice though.

Setlist:

ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM - FIREBUG BAR, LEICESTER - w/ELLA UNDONE - 30/11/06

Small but attentive crowd. Decent sound. I whimsically hid behind a curtain during Mem Hall and confused myself. A nice end to a long month's gigs. Celebrated with some freestyle grooveboxing at the end.

Setlist:

JOHN KENNEDY XFM SESSION - 27/11/06

After a pint and a pizza with Applicants we headed over to Leicester Square. Had a nice chat with Mr Kennedy and played three songs, once again with Junkplanet. He also played two tracks from the EP, the applicants single and a junkplanet demo. Ace.

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE RECORDS INSTORE - PURE GROOVE RECORDS LONDON - w/THE OPEN MOUTHS & APPLICANTS - 27/11/06

A nice intimate gig with us three bands showing off our Brainlove releases. I was joined by Junkplanet once again. Applicants surpassed themselves with a Hoedown version of 'crappucino'. Great fun.

Setlist:

CLUB BRAINLOVE/"THE INDEPENDENT SCRUTINEER" EP LAUNCH PARTY - WATER RATS, LONDON - w/JUNKPLANET, REVOLUTION 74, COCK N BULL KID & NAPOLEON IIIRD - 25/11/06

Another really great fun night. I could get used to this 'touring' business. My set was cut a little short by other bands overunning and the pretty complicated changeovers from 5 really different acts. but it was great. well received, girls danced. Playing with bass & drums on 'Hospital' felt amazing and was all too short and sweet.

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE VS. BADVIBES - DOG & PARTRIDGE, BOLTON - w/JUNKPLANET & APPLICANTS - 24/11/06

This is my favourite gig I've done this year by a country mile. Absolutely brilliant fun, a great job done on the sound. I got to watch applicants by turns charm and piss of the people of Bolton. Junkplanets hyper-real futuristic living room setup transformed the Dog into something quite special. Then Adam Badvibes played a fucking brilliant DJ set to round the night off. Awesome.

Setlist:

KRUGER MAGAZINE NIGHT - BUFFALO BAR, CARDIFF - w/KID HARPOON & THE HA'PENNIES - 23/11/06

Quiet and a little lacking in atmosphere this gig was. A decent sized crowd and the sound was great but somehow it just didn't fly. All the fun was being had on the other side of town at the Twisted by Design cd launch I think.

Setlist:

ABER RAG CHILDREN IN NEED NIGHT - HARLEY'S BAR, ABERYSTWYTH -w/EAR BIRTH, THE VOICES & POSSIBLE TOMORROW - 17/11/06

This could have been so much worse than it was. Harley's new management neglected to acquire a mixing desk for their new life as a live music venue. Thankfully Tom from Possible Tomorrow had brought his own for his band and saved the day for me.

Setlist:

LITTLE HELLFIRE CLUB - THE MARRS BAR, WORCESTER - w/THE HOT PUPPIES & THE HOAX - 16/11/06

A mini aber-reunion w/the puppies and organised by Pete from ...and what will be left of them. Great gig with great sound (even if 'rep2' seemed to make one guy's ears hurt. Enjoyed it loads.

Setlist:

CAFE NIRVANA BEMEFIT GIG - CLUB NIRVANA, WIGAN - 12/11/06

Second gig with the laptop and it didn't behave at all. Cut out on every song in front of a room packed with under 18s who were mostly there to see their mates in a punk band. Got a lot of handshakes after my set, some dancing, kids forming a circle on KK4. Interesting, wish I could've played properly for them. I've no idea who else played this cos I was on first and left straight after my set.

Setlist:

LONEPILOT # 9 - THE MACBETH, HOXTON - w/FUPPER, MICHAEL WOOKEY & TOM BUGS (BUGBRAND) - 08/11/06

First gig I've done with a laptop and was very happy with the complete lack of technical fuckups that resulted. Also was good to play some new stuff. Lonepilot is a great night dedicated to strictly solo performers. The other acts were all really excellent in their diversity.

Setlist:

MPAS MAGAZINE 'ORIENTEERING' DAY 3 - THE GOOD SHIP, KILBURN - w/FONDA 500, CHRIS T-T, & THE NEW ROYAL FAMILY - 27/10/06

Good gig this. Some trouble with quiet guitar and sound guy a bit scissor happy with set times. Part of the 'Oxjam' charity nights up and down the UK.

Setlist:

FOUNDATION NIGHT - DRY BAR, MANCHESTER - w/THE STAR FIGHTER PILOT, MR FOGG & DOUBLE JOHN GREY 28/09/06

Great sound at this night, Dry Bar's looking better than it used. An all electro bill. Good crowd. Shame about my amp throwing a sulk and forcing a change of final song.

Setlist:

SMALL TOWN AMERICA ALL DAYER - 93 FEET EAST, LONDON - w/65DAYSOFSTATIC, DIE DIE DIE!, TIGER FORCE, JETPLANE LANDING & MORE... 16/09/06

Annual charity all dayer from STA records. I played a short set in a very, very hot room. The groovebox was massively loud after me chiding the sound man for it being wimpish during the first song.

Setlist:

HELLBOT PARTY - CARDIGAN ARMS, LEEDS - w/STINKERTON, NAPOLEON IIIRD & BONSAI KITTENS - 12/08/06

Brithday party gig for James of Stinkerton ("leeds' premier weezer tribute band") so a really good atmosphere and a nice enthusiastic crowd. Had a great time, got persuaded to resurrect an old favourite or two and best of all got to see the discoelectrometaldancepop of the Bonsai Kittens.

Setlist:

BOLTON ELECTRONICA SHOWCASE - NUMBER 15, BOLTON - w/THE AUTHORITY, STATIC BIZARRE & NUMBER 7, & MUSINGS - 08/08/06

Really enjoyed this. Bolton Council's music showcase promoted a night of electronica so I tried to include some more electronic material in the set. Went down a treat. Also did some groovebox adlibbing at the end which is a new thing.

Setlist:

INTERKONNECT NIGHT - DOG & PARTRIDGE, BOLTON - w/ISLANDS LOST AT SEA, THE ENGLISH CHANNEL & RANDOM NUMBER - 07/07/06

Serious problems with the sound on this night, a well meaning but inexperienced sound man held the night's start up by about two hours and seemingly varied the levels at random throughout the night. At times it felt like I was playing in one room and the music came out in the other. I was not happy. Overall it was fine though, kind of a mirror image to the last D&P show when I fucked up everything I possibly could, this time it was everything else that fucked up. ho hum...

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE RECORDS SINGLES CLUB LAUNCH PARTY - NOTTING HILL ARTS CLUB, LONDON - w/SHIMURA CURVES, NAPOLEON IIIRD & TIM TEN YEN - 25/06/06

My debut as a 'recording artist' alongside the other three bands from vol's 1 & 2 of the singles club. Rather ace. afternoon gig blighted a little by football showing in the other room. Great response from the crowd for me and all the other bands. Shimura Curves self proclaimed 'Indie band meets a hen party' was great fun, and Tim and his Sinister Cat got everyone dancing it the end. I'm bored of talking about how great Napoleon is...

Setlist:

LUPINE NIGHT - CLUB NIRVANA, WIGAN - w/YR BITTER EX LOVERS & THE ZEEMA ZEES - 21/06/06

I enjoyed this gig. Not a lot to report except me twatting the keyboard so hard during 'Our New Hospital Sucks' that the omnichord fell on the floor and all the keys came off. I fixed it onstage and treated the people of Wigan to a flurry of random chords and swearing.

Setlist:

IT SOUNDED BETTER IN MY HEAD - NIGHT & DAY CAFE, MANCHESTER - w/TRADEMARK, GERMLIN & :( - 13/06/06

Great lineup of electronic acts including Germlin - PWL magazine's Man Of The Year. Had a bit of trouble during my set with the monitors going completely and no vocals coming through at all. Scuppered what was a pretty good set up until then. Also the omnichord broke but that always happens.

Setlist:

BRAINLOVE NIGHT - SUNFLOWER LOUNGE, BIRMINGHAM - w/NAPOLEON IIIRD, APPLICANTS & THE OPEN MOUTHS - 09/06/06

As ever with a Brainlove gig this was masses of fun. Applicants are immensely entertaining, every band needs a member whose main job is knock people over. My set went well, I threw in a short snippet of Napoleon's song from the 7" as a segue between the two Repetitions.

Setlist:

METRONOMY SUPPORT - NUMBER 15, BOLTON - also w/NAPOLEON IIIRD & THE AUTHORITY - 27/05/06

Great gig all round. No real technical problems this time, other than keyboard related issues all of my own making. I went for a more chilled set and opened with an omnichord version of Rep1. Great sound courtesy of Andy D.O.A. The other acts were ace too. Napoleon on form as always but playing to a sadly small and inattentive crowd, only a couple of whom lightened up and danced to Metronomy's uberfunky electro pop. Billed as Bolton's first 'electronica' gig it didn't quite pull a crowd. Perhaps there was other stuff on, perhaps Bolton's not quite ready for a full bill of the stuff yet. Still a good time was had by all, and shall we D.I. the mammoth?

Setlist:

TRASH BALL - STUDENTS' UNION, BANGOR - w/HELLOMYNAMEISJOSH, PORTRAIT OF A LIFETIME, & KOBE - 25/05/06

This was an excellent gig. A packed crowd of soon-to-be graduates celebrating then of their exams, hundreds of fresh pairs of ears. Girls danced, members of the Metal Society left 'on principle' (so i'm told). I signed someone's arm (never done that before). And Josh's coat rack banging beatboxing set, complete with White Stripes cover, was worth the trip alone.

Setlist:-

INTERKONNECT II - DOG & PARTRIDGE, BOLTON - w/THE EMOS, THE ARAL SEA, SAKURAI, RED PANDA, & THE MINIONS OF GEOFFREY - 05/05/06

Either an embarrassing farce or a heroic triumph against all odds. The odds in question being my guitar string breaking on the first song, borrowing a guitar which I couldn't tune, attempting to play Rep2 despite knowing it wasn't tuned and it sounding awful, having to ad lib a keyboard bit on the end, drunkenly attempting to play an unrehearsed solo piano song whilst someone tuned it for me, it then disagreeing with the amp i'd borrowed, the omnichord cutting out and etc etc. A great deal of goodwill from the crowd carried me through what actually, with hindsight, wasn't a bad set. I even got an encore.

Pretty random setlist cos of the Plan B... C... D... X... situation:

CLUB FANDANGO - WATER RATS, LONDON - w/MONO TAXI, BRIAN JACKET LETDOWN, & MISTY'S BIG ADVENTURE - 03/05/06

The sun was shining London's shoulders were bare and I took to an early stage to a happily full room. A new fuller version of Rep1 and a strange backwards guitar version of KK4. Some problems with a borrowed amp but all in all a succesful jaunt.

Setlist:

IT SOUNDED BETTER IN MY HEAD, STAR & GARTER, MANCHESTER - w/FIGHT FIRE WITH WATER - 9/04/06

This gig didn't have many people there. There were 14 watching me and 10 watching fight fire with water. So it goes sometimes. Was still quite fun. nice and intimate. tra la la...

Setlist:

D.O.A. STUDIOS NIGHT, DOG & PARTRIDGE, BOLTON - w/DAMIEN REILLY (OUR FOLD), VENUS STAR, & ARC GENERATOR 16/03/06

A quieter Bolton gig this time. 'Tough Crowd', in the words of Andy DOA. Played a less obvious set than last time I was there. Also very rudely left straight after I'd played, which I don't normally do, cos I was going chez NapIII the next day. So I didn't see the other bands.

Setlist:-

COOPERS ARMS, ABERYSTWYTH - w/SUPPORT FROM DAVID MYSTERIOUS & SWEET BABOO - 11/03/06

First bona fide self-organised gig for a loooong time. All went swimmingly. Me & DM managed to sort the sound out this time. Sterling performances from all concerned. Really good crowd who freaked everyone out by being quiet and listening - you don't get much of that. Also, does anyone know whether owls have legs?

Setlist:

REVOLUTION 74 SUPPORT, CHICHESTER STUDENTS' UNION - 24/02/06

Re-united with fellow Aber denizens Jon & Rich (ex-Seven Words) playing with their embarassingly good new band Revolution 74. My set was a little on the shit side. Some early fuckups and really weedily quiet sound threw me a little.

Setlist:

photo by John Brainlove'NAPOLEON VS. CHURCHILL' NIGHT FROM BRAINLOVE RECORDS, HUGO'S SPEAKER PALACE, HACKNEY - w/NAPOLEON IIIRD, JAPANESE INTELLIGENCE MIND CONTROL (VICKI CHURCHILL), & TIM TEN YEN - 18/02/06

Hugo's Speaker Palace is the coolest venue I've ever played. No doubt. This gig was excellent. I opened with an unamplified song on the omnichord and ended with some gabba for good measure. I'm considering a move to Hackney...

Setlist:

ATTACK + DEFEND 'OWL' EP LAUNCH NIGHT, CARDIFF CLWB IFOR BACH - also w/SWEET BABOO - 10/02/06

Nice attentive crowd and good sound, though I've been told the grooveboxes were a bit quiet. Perhaps they were tired after the long journey? Sweet Baboo is a great charismatic songwriter and performer and Attack and Defend turned the whole Clwb into an Owl-a-thon for their art rock set. Great gig all round.

Setlist:

'TART TART II' NIGHT, MANCHESTER DRY BAR - w/LITTLE LIVING TRUST, HIJERA, THE CHIMES, THE RESISTANCE, and PURE JUICE TRIO - 3/2/06

Unforseen troubles at Dry Bar led to all six bands for a planned two floor show being squeezed onto one bill downstairs. An eclectic night with lots of electronic/jam bands. I chose to play a slightly more left field set compared to the 'Greatest Hits' selections of the last two gigs. Not the best I've ever played.

Setlist:

photo by SianDROWNED IN SOUND 'PICKS FOR 2006', CAMDEN BARFLY - w/COMANECHI, THE STRANGE DEATH OF LIBERAL ENGLAND, JENIFEREVER, JAMIE T, and THE MACCABEES - 27/01/06

Insane headlining slot to a sold out Barfly. Playing at three days notice. The stage got invaded, people were dancing on each others shoulders. I got fondled mid-song, the D2's plug got kicked out mid song but it was still great.

Setlist:

photo by SianBOLTON MUSIC COLLECTIVE NIGHT, DOG & PARTRIDGE, BOLTON - w/THE ARAL SEA and VENUS STARS - 21/01/06

Fantastic gig. After feeling like I'd been playing the same set for years I put in some new songs and a new running order and it seemed to work. Despite some organisational hi-jinx it went really well. The other bands were good and I got an encore, though I struggled to think of something I could play.

Setlist:

BOLTON MUSIC RADIO LIVE SESSION AND INTERVIEW - DOA STUDIOS, BOLTON 8/1/06

Does this count as a gig? Who knows. Speaking before I've heard the recording I've got to say I wasn't massively pleased with how I played on this thing. Very weird to be playing a 'gig' in a closed room with only a few people. The interview afterwards was great fun and is my second ever, in which I revealed that I know far too much about Jaffa Cakes.

Setlist:-

WORLD DOMINATION LEAGUE #3 - THE LUMINAIRE, LONDON 6/1/06 - w/ATOMS FOR PEACE, SPACE PEACOCKS and THE BRIDGE GANG

First PWL gig in London. It was fantastic. The venue was ace. The sound was ace. Famous faces in the crowd. Played the best I can play. Top.

Setlist:-

JOFF WHITTEN - (UNPLANNED) ACOUSTIC SUPPORT SLOT, NIGHT & DAY, MANCHESTER 3/01/06 - w/IAN ADAMSON & LUCY CONROY

Went to watch Ian play and some no-shows further up the bill led to me bravely stepping in to keep the people of manchester entertained for 20 minutes.
